Depression, The Life Destroyer.
Depression is the one big thing that can literally destroy one’s life. That is, if the depressed person doesn’t recognize the problem and take affirmative action to get it under control. It is about time that someone shed some light on this subject. First of all, it’s nothing to be ashamed of. It doesn’t mean that you are crazy. It is a very real sickness. Put simply, it’s a chemical imbalance in one’s brain. It can happen to anyone. I happen to know the symptoms of depression, as I was there a very long time myself. It will rob one of sleep, happiness and the joys of life.
1. Depression can and will destroy a life, if not corrected.
For most of my first 50 years of life I had a problem that I could not understand. It caused me to lose all interest in everything.
I was paralyzed with being sick and feelings of being worthless. I could not work, eat, or join in any activities.
All I could do when these spells came over me was to just stay in bed. I did not have the energy or will to do anything else.
Overcoming Clinical Depression - More Than Just Positive Thoughts.
[...]Clinical depression is a form of illness that affects us just like any other illness. It can’t be cured simply by willing it, nor can it be cured by positive thoughts alone. Whilst creating and maintaining a positive attitude and outlook towards life is a crucial step in overcoming depression, it alone will not suffice. Overcoming clinical depression involves a number of different factors, which must all be used in conjunction with one another. Of course one can take medication to help manage their clinical depression, but this won’t serve as any long term cure. The true way of overcoming clinical depression involves changing the fundamental outlook you have towards life. This includes changing your general thought patterns, the attitude you have towards others and the way you analyze situations. It’s important to realize that the way you perceive yourself, and the way others perceive you, are often two completely different things. In fact, if you are suffering from clinical depression, you can almost be certain that they’re two different things[...]2. Depression is a robber of the joys of life.
when these spells of depression came on there was no joy to be found anywhere in my life. I became
a different person, a person that I, myself did not know. There is no way to predict when depression is coming to call on you. After it has run it’s course, it leaves just as suddenly.
3. Depression will make one seek shelter or escape from the pain.
During my times of severe depression, I found an escape through the use of alcohol. Only while highly intoxicated could I seem to find any peace. Some will tell you that drinking alcohol will make you depressed. However. I found out personally, that it’s reversed. Depression causes one to seek relief through alcohol. If anyone tells you different, they don’t know what they are talking about.
4. Depression is very hard on family members.
The times when I did not know what my problem was, my family suffered because they could not figure out why I wished to be alone, and not with them. It was very frustrating for my family to see me in the light of, not knowing who I really was. So that made all of us not know what the problem was. It is something only a psychiatrist can understand. That is until the family members and yourself have had the experience and had it diagnosed.
Depression Leading Cause.
[...]With the progress being made in modern medicine genetically some of the leading causes to depression may be a thing of the past. These are the 10 leading killers of American men in 2003, the most recent year for which these statistics are available from the CDC: Rank Cause Percentage of male deaths Heart disease 28.0 Cancer 24.0 Unintentional injuries 5.9 Stroke 5.1 Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) 5.1 Diabetes 2.9 Influenza and pneumonia 2.4 Suicide 2.1 Kidney disease 1.7 Alzheimer’s disease 1.5 Total 78.7 Source: Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), 2003 More than 90 percent of people who die by suicide have suffered from depression, other mental illness or had a substance-abuse disorder, according to the National Institute on Mental Health. Almost four times as many males as females die by suicide. Firearms are by far the favored method, with 57 percent of men and 32 percent of women using them to commit suicide[...]5. Depression will cost one his job if not treated early.
I have left many jobs because I rationalized that I no longer liked my employment and just wished to go some place else. Nothing was at all rational about the way I was feeling. I just knew that I must leave that job. The bad part about this was that many of these jobs that I left were great jobs, that I loved, and made excellent money at. Then after about a week after I made these hasty and foolish decisions I really regretted it. Many times I got the job back.
6. Depression will cause divorces and split ups.
During the times of severe depression, I would decide that I no longer wished to remain with my spouse at the time. I found something wrong with each little imagined incident. She could not keep my interest. Perhaps that is the main reason I was married six times, only to live by myself now. However it’s my choice to live alone now. Once a person gets their depression under control, they learn to like themselves more that they ever thought they could.
7. Depression causes one to lie to themselves and everyone around them.
During the times when I was depressed, I told myself that everything was someone’s fault, not mine. Only after I finally got to the point of seeking treatment did I realize what had been wrong with me all of my life up to that point. The sad part was that it took me so long to find that I had depression.
8. Depression can cause one to have suicide thoughts and actions.
What really woke me up after almost killing me, was my attempt at suicide. I had contemplated this for almost one full year. I guess you could say that I was sick and tired of being sick and tired.
This was longest period of depression that I had ever experienced. Prior to this one, they would last no more than three days. However, during those three days I would do nothing but drink and lay around.
I just did not have the will to get up and go. Then I would snap out of it and it was like nothing had ever happened.
Oh, I tried to figure it out, but could not. So maybe this will educate the intended persons and their families.
I hope that I have explained what happens to a person when they experience depression.
The main thing here is that the person that is depressed does not know it. It takes someone else like a family member to realize what is going on. That family member must be enlightened on the subject before they can see what is happening in the life of the depressed person.
