The Law of Rhythm - A Personal Story.
There are many universal laws that can help us maintain the positive thoughts we need to feel great and succeed. One is called the Law of Rhythm. It states that all of nature, including ourselves, moves in cycles and waves.
By understanding the Law of Rhythm, we can understand the ebbs and flows of our whole lives, from our finances to our emotional experience.
For sixteen years, I experienced dysthymia, a serious, chronic form depression. It started in my mid-teens and became worse as I matured.
Nonetheless, I felt some happiness, some gratitude, and a great deal of love. My marriage was joyous, and my relationships were rewarding.
But I felt a constant ache in my heart. I’d cry without reason, feeling not just my own pain, but the pain of others, of the entire world.
Fatigue knocked my off my feet for days at end, yet I couldn’t sleep. My legs hurt with tiredness.
I could barely hold a job. I never knew when exhaustion and tears would claim me.
Fatigue and depression are symptoms of many disorders. With regular medical check-ups, I ruled them out. Over several years, I tried everything I could to overcome this problem and break through to the world of joy.
I finally did it. I found expansive joy and fulfillment. Yes, it’s everything it’s cracked up to be!
My story is filled with trial, error, persistence, help, and spiritual guidance — but it’s a story for another time. I hope to be privileged to share it with you soon.
This story comes after I’d overcome depression. Here, I learned to live within the rhythm of life, even when that rhythm felt frightening.
Having surmounted depression, I was filled with joy and light that was grounded in my daily life. I had more energy than I’d had for years. I began to emerge as the shining light that each of us truly is.
In all of this joy, though, I’d sometimes feel a flutter of sadness — and it terrified me. Was the depression returning? Would it consume me?
I pushed the sadness away, refusing to look at it. In other words, I suppressed a normal, healthy part of myself: Rhythm.
Long-term depression left me unwilling to accept the rhythm of my emotions. I wanted no waves, but a flat line of happiness.
After learning about the Law of Rhythm, though, my attitude toward sadness changed. Now, I embrace sadness when it comes, because I know it’s just part of the rhythm of life.
Recently, sadness visited me when grief for the death of a loved one was reawakened. I tried to deny the sadness, until I remembered that it was a normal part of rhythm.
So I embraced it. I talked to it as though it were another being. I invited it to join me throughout my day.
With this compassionate response, the sadness healed. Joy filled me again. I was more powerful than my fears. Depression could not take me.
Rhythm is often understood in an up-down pattern. In this model, we would cycle from happiness to sadness in equal measure. But this doesn’t have to be so.
Imagine a horizontal wavy line drawn in the sand. The upward waves represent emotional highs. The dips represent emotional lows.
Now, tip your head a little, and see the wavy line on the diagonal, as though it were a staircase leading up. There’s still rhythm in those stairs, but it is the rhythm of constant progression toward a more evolved way of being.
The “lows” are no longer “lows,” but are learning experiences. They’re opportunities to accept ourselves more.
With the self-acceptance taught by the Law of Rhythm, we increase our capacity for happiness. We expand as vessels for joy.
We can use this same understanding to increase not just our joy, but our prosperity, health, inner peace, and more.
